Herford Branch
News Letter

MAY 2010

Dear Members

It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Branch member Paul Titman who was our Bar Manager and general handyman for several years before he took ill and could no longer continue in his position. Condolences were passed onto Paul’s family from all members of the Branch and several members from the Branch attended his funeral.

Soldiers from the Signal Regiment have all returned home safely after a demanding six month tour of Afghanistan where they provided communications support to British and coalition troops. There return home culminated in a medals parade which was presided over by the Signal Officer in Chief (Army) Brigadier Ted Flint a former Commanding Officer of the Regiment. Welcome home all and congratulations on a job well done.

Following my appeal in the last newsletter for Welfare Caseworkers, I am delighted to say that three volunteers have come forward and will be attending the two day residential course in November.

BRANCH EVENTS

The Committee have worked very hard since the last newsletter putting on various events in the Branch for members. These events have been extensively advertised through posters and flyers being placed in various locations and also advertised on BFBS radio. Sadly, these events have been poorly attended and it is disheartening for the Committee when they have put so much work and effort into organising these events. Please remember that it is your Branch so do come along and support these events when you can.

At the Branch Meeting on the 3 rd February, I had a surprise for a member of the Branch when they were presented with the Legions third highest award. The President, John Walker MBE presented on my behalf a Gold Badge to Marion Perry along with a copy of her citation. Congratulations to Marion on an award well deserved. It is not easy to earn the award of a Gold Badge and it has to go through many processes before it finally reaches the desk of the National Chairman who has the final say if the member deserves the award or not. It is indeed an honour for the Branch that we have been successful in recently obtaining three Gold Badges for Branch members. Suffice to say, that Marion was in total shock.

On the16 th March, Eddie Hefferman and Terry Salmon manned an information stall at the Forces Resettlement Fair held in the Schutzenhof in Herford. They had a very busy day and received 53 pension applications, 31 general enquiries, 2 changes of address notifications and they signed up 27 members for the District of Germany (sadly none for our Branch) and 13 for the Saint James Branch. Well done Eddie and Terry.

On the 17 th April when the sun finally decided to shine we held our annual Branch Spring clean up day to prepare the garden amongst other things ready for the summer. I would like to thank the following members for giving their time to help; Scooter Allford. Derek Haydon, John Hincks, John and Terry Chambers, Garry and Ise Blackman, Dave and Daniel Jobson, Marion Perry, Emma Whittaker, Jens Hefferman, Dickie Pollard, Terry Salmon and Mick Hudson. I would particularly like to thank Scooter Allford and Dave Jobson for staying on until 2000 hrs to complete the new roof on the deluxe smoking area.

Over the period 4 th and 5 th May, myself, Dave Jobson, Jens Hefferman and Helmut Wolsdorf attended the annual parade at Nieuw Dordrecht followed the next day by the 65 th anniversary parade of the liberation of Holland in Wageningen. Jens Hefferman carried our Branch Standard on both events and to my surprise he kept in step during both parades. Thanks Jens for carry the Branch Standard and also for cooking us all a delicious breakfast along with Dave Jobson on the morning of the Wageningen Parade.

On the 16 th May we held a car book sale. Luckily the rain kept off and the event was extremely successful and we had 24 stalls on the day and over two hundred people attended. In addition, we raised €500 towards our Poppy Appeal. As this event proved so popular we intend to hold another one possibly in September.

8 cyclists along with a back up team from 1 ( UK) Armoured Division Signal Regiment rode a 1000 mile route in just seven days visiting all 16 of the English and Welsh rugby union teams contesting this year’s Anglo Welsh Rugby Union Cup. They took on this challenge to raise awareness and much needed funds for The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. On the 29 th May, Eddie Hefferman MBE our Branch Poppy Appeal Organiser was presented with a cheque for €9063.11 in the WO’s & Sgt’s Mess. A big thank you goes out to Major Jim Lambeth who lead the challenge and to all the cyclists and backup team who took part in the event and raised such a magnificent sum towards our Poppy Appeal.

On the 5 th June we held a second Branch clean up day to complete the jobs that we had not completed the first time. Not so many members turned up to help as the previous one. However, as the weather was glorious and hot it was more than likely that they decided to stay at home to have a BBQ with friends or have the day out somewhere. Nevertheless, we still managed to get a lot of things done. Thanks to the following for giving up their time to help out on the day; Dave & Daniel Jobson, Scooter Allford, John & Terry Chambers along with their two friends Dave and Cynthia who were visiting from the UK, Jens Hefferman, Eddie Sirp and not forgetting Marion Perry for providing the food.

On the 26 th June, a British Forces Veterans Day will be held in Mansergh Barracks in Gutersloh. The event commences at 1000 hrs and finishes at 1415 hrs. There are two ways to participate in the event. In either case, you must register your intent to attend otherwise you will be not allowed entry. The first way is that the Branch has booked a minibus for the day and if you wish to take advantage of the transport please enter your name on the list in the Branch and a consolidated list of names will be forward to gain entrance. The second way is that if you wish to travel by private car you must register your details by using a registration form which can be obtained from the Branch office. Also on this day, the Station Fayre will take place on the sports pitch in Wentworth Barracks commencing at 1100. The Branch will have an information stand and tombola stall present on the day.

The world cup is upon us and we will be showing England’s games live on the big screen. See the forecast of events in the Branch and also on our website.

Bingo is held each Friday evening with eyes down at 2000 hrs. This is a popular event and an enjoyable evening is had by all. The bingo evenings also raise money for out Poppy Appeal, so why not come along and join in and also bring your friends along. You do not have to be a Branch member to play bingo and all are welcome.

Many Branch functions are already planned or being planned for the coming year. Please check the notice board in the Branch or the web site www.rblherford.de under events for details.

As a reminder, all veterans of HM Forces are entitled to apply for and wear the Armed Forces Veterans Badge. Go to the link http://www.veterans-uk.info/new_badge/badge.html to apply for your badge which only takes a matter of weeks to receive along with a certificate of entitlement. If you do not have access to the internet please contact Mike Tanser who will be happy to assist you in obtaining the badge For information, serving Military personnel are issued with the badge when they leave the Armed Forces and therefore cannot apply for it through this route.

For those history buffs amongst you or if you are just nostalgic about the past and the barracks and areas where you served in the old BAOR, there is a very interesting web site that’s full of interesting photographs and the history of the various barracks. Did you know for example that Block F in Wentworth Barracks where our Branch is situated used to be a hospital during the war. Go to the link www.baor-locations.com to find out more.

In closing, I would ask you all to bear in mind the Legions mission, which is to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces. At the time of going to print, our Armed Forces in Afghanistan have already lost 47 service personnel killed in action this year and 108 last year alone with a total of 292 in all. Our services are being called upon more and more for help, not only by Veterans but also many serving personnel . I therefore ask you to question yourself, are you just a badge carrier or could you help to raise funds for our appeal by attending the Branch and supporting our functions, carry out fund raising events or just helping out in any small way.

Mike Tanser

Branch Chairman
